CHCA Meeting Minutes: October 2009

The meeting of the Crow Hill Community Association, Inc. was held on October 20, 2009 at the Haitian/American Daycare, Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, New York.


The meeting was called to order at 7:45 p.m. by Eve Porter.


Minutes of the September 15, 2009 meeting were not available, but were posted on the internet.


Ms. Porter asked everyone to browse through the 25th Anniversary list of suggested events and feel free to add anything that may be necessary, because everyone’s help is needed. She asked everyone to read line by line and make comments for November’s meeting.

Ms. Porter asked Nina to give a summary of the planned events. Nina said that first we have to figure out who is willing to spend time on the planning or how big an event it will be. Should it be one day or several days of celebration?

Nina also said that the Association needs to raise funds. It is important to increase membership and to engage and support the merchants. Franklin Avenue could become a destination again.

It was also discussed that something needs to be done to the site at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Eastern Parkway. One suggestion was to engage some kids to do some painting on the plywood wall.

A spring painting contest was suggested. The use of canvass on a wall or placed on the ground so adults and kids could paint.

The Precinct should be contacted to get no parking for one day so that the merchants could bring their merchandise outside.

The elected officials will be contacted, letting them know of this.

Ms. Porter reported that she did a walk through on Franklin Avenue and the merchants had different excuses for not paying their dues.


The newsletter needs to be revised.

Ms. Porter said that she would like for Mr. Adler, who is a Journalist to take a look at the last newsletter.


Ms. Porter said that she spoke to Assemblyman Jefferies regarding Dormitory Authority.

Six years ago, we received monies from Dormitory Authority. We spent some of it, but were unable to use all of it.

The grant was given, but in order to use the rest of it, we had to get someone to do the job, pay for it, submit receipts and then be reimbursed by Dormitory Authority. Since we did not have the money to spend, the rest is still at Dormitory Authority. We are hoping to get to use it soon.


Ms. Porter reported that she spoke to Ms. Lorraine Quinn, who works for a funding group in Las Vegas and was told that the Group has millions of dollars to give to groups. Ms. Porter promised to speak to her regarding our needs.

It was agreed that in order to get people to come to the meetings, that fliers should be done before each meeting. Someone volunteered to do the fliers.

Stacey who is the Treasurer and heads the “Go Green/Go Clean” Committee, said that on Sunday, October 25th, daffodil bulbs will be planted so they will come up in the spring. The planters on Franklin Avenue will be done also. It was suggested that painting or stenciling “Crowhill” should be done on the planters.

They will be meeting at Bristen’s at 9:00 am.

Ms. Porter also reported that there are 2010 census jobs at the Census Bureau. The website is Phone No. 1-866-861.2010. Everyone should participate in the 2010 census regardless of your status.
